Something my therapist got me to do was writing down non negotiables & a very clear line of disrespect & have that written down so I can refer back to it. Ie I will excuse 3 times someone missing a boundary (IF they apologise when told it was a boundary) but past that, it’s goodbye. A non-negotiable for me is giving me space when I’m overstimulated. As long as I communicate that with them so they aren’t guessing, I won’t accept less than that. Things like that have helped me nope out of relationships so much faster rather than keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. I’m up front with them about these things so they know & I state they can ask what they are again any time but once it has been communicated, if they don’t respect that then it’s over. I also encourage them to see clear boundaries with me as well. It also helps with communication. Now some are good at manipulating the situation but overall it helps

I don’t think you can ever truly know. I’m learning how to attribute what happened in the past to the person (or myself) and not what that person was to me. So not to a relationship, parent, friendship. It was the person, not the person because of the label. Also, knowing when to give someone grace to be human versus when to cut them off is so helpful.
