Teacher shortages shouldn’t surprise us if we’re being honest about the conditions many educators have been working under. When adults are experiencing chronic stress symptoms, disrupted sleep, headaches, stomach issues, muscle tension, and nervous systems stuck in survival mode, we shouldn’t be shocked when fewer people want to enter the profession and more people decide they can’t stay. And if a school environment isn’t sustainable for the adults in the building, what does that mean for the children growing up inside it? This isn’t about teachers needing more resilience, better self-care, or stronger coping skills. It’s about creating conditions that human nervous systems can actually thrive in. I know this because I lived it. And here’s the part that still stops me in my tracks: after leaving the classroom, over time, my body started to heal. Maybe instead of debating whether burnout is real, it’s time to listen to what neuroscience, stress research, and educators themselves have been telling us for years. Not to give up on public education. Not to starve it of resources. Not to pretend the answer is simply asking people to do more with less. But to take what we’ve learned and build something more sustainable for both kids and the adults who care for them. Because teacher wellness was never about helping teachers survive impossible conditions better. It was always supposed to be about creating conditions worth staying in. If you’ve experienced this yourself, I’d love to hear your story below. And if you’re interested in building classrooms and systems that support brains instead of constantly fighting against them, comment SYSTEMS. #TeacherBurnout #TeacherWellness #EducationReform #ExecutiveFunction #BrainBasedLearning
