Banh Duc Nong is a relatively unknown Hanoi street food that locals love, and it deserves more attention. It is a warm, silky rice mixture that feels almost like a mochi soup, served with ground pork, wood ear mushrooms, a splash of nuoc mam, and a small handful of cilantro. It is one of the best cold weather foods in Hanoi, comforting and full of classic northern Vietnamese flavors. This dish is a popular local snack, usually served in smaller bowls and always inexpensive. It originally began as an affordable option for the less fortunate, and that history is still reflected in the price today. Even with its humble origins, it remains sneaky delicious and easily one of my personal favorite Hanoi foods whenever I can find it. This vendor here has been making Banh Duc Nong in Hanoi for almost thirty years, and that experience shows in every spoonful.
