@lochnessofficial: This is what happens when you have bunch of folks who have no knowledge of raccoon biology run a study like this. Not to mention the fact that the professor who led the study (again, who has no real knowledge of raccoons) is now going to various news sources spreading harmful misinformation.
I know a woman who bottle fed and raised a raccoon and one day it tore open her Achilles tendon. They are WILD animals

whats this obsession with wild animals “domesticating” themselves. I feel like 1. this would take way longer than it’s being talked about, and 2. I feel like it kinda ignores how wild animals are surviving in urban environments

It really just sucks because the headline "Racoons are domesticating" will always be more popular than any detraction to it. It will hurt the raccoons so much

I'm guessing just becuase a baby racoons imprint on you, or you have a backyard racoon that eats from your hand and cuddles, that doesn't qualify for domestication?

Jason Shron :
Domestication is simply a potential in an animal to maintain juvenile characteristics. Any animal can have this mindset as long as it identifies someone as parent. The degree of this belief determines whether we consider an animal to be domesticated or wild.

Have you thought about calculating response ratios using a pseudo-meta analysis approach with the metafor package? You would have to assume the rural populations are the control group and aggregate the “urban” populations as the treatment group might be a good post-hoc validation approach.

Don’t know if anyone said it yet, but domestication is a mutual process: the more we domesticate a species to humanity’s needs, the more that species domesticate us to its needs. (That is okay, BTW)
