Why Vitamin D is SO important for you and your baby 👶🏻👩🏻☀️❄️ A recent report from the FSAI on Vitamin D, showed that almost half of Irish people are deficient, with severe deficiency present in 15-20% of adults.  Vitamin D is vital for calcium absorption which helps to keep our bones and teeth strong. This is even more important for growing babies and young children. Vitamin D also supports our immune system and the maintenance of normal muscle function. 🐟🥚🥩 While some foods such as oily fish, fortified cereals, meat and eggs do contain vitamin D, it is often limited and not enough to meet our daily requirements.  We can make vitamin D from the sun but generally between the end of October to March, there is limited sunshine in Ireland and the UK which means that we have to depend on food and supplements to get our daily requirements.  The HSE in Ireland recommend that between 31st October and 17th of March that everyone in Ireland takes a vitamin D supplement. 👶🏻 Breastfed Babies under 12 months (or if your baby is drinking less than 300ml formula per day)  - 5 micrograms all year round 🍼 Formula fed babies Formula is usually fortified with vitamin D so check the pack before supplementing. 👵🏼👴🏼 Adults aged 65 and older 15 micrograms all year round. 📅 From 31st October - 17th March 👦🏻 Children aged 1-4 Years 5 micrograms of vitamin D daily.  👧🏻 Children aged 5-12 Years 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily.  🧑🏽👩🏻 People aged 13-64 years 15 microgram Vitamin D daily.  ☕️ A great way to remember taking your Vitamin D, is to leave it beside something you do every day. For me, I keep it beside my coffee machine. 🛑 It is really important not to exceed the recommended daily requirements of Vitamin D. If you are taking another supplement such as fish oils for example, this can sometimes have vitamin D already in it. Taking too much vitamin D and cause too much calcium to build up in the body and can actually weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and heart.
