if there's anything i learned in onomastics it's that many river's names originally just meant "river" or "water" or maybe "flowing". it's kind of funny how humans tend to name things exactly what they are

I actually think it’s really interesting how so many ancient peoples’ names for major geographical features of their civilization just mean that thing: the river, the mountains or they’re a little bit more creative if they have more than one and so they’ll add an adjective like “snow topped mountains” or “river that moves fast” and modern people when they find out feel disappointed. But I think it just proves linguists right that humans like to keep language simple when possible. I mean when I talk with friends where I live and someone says they’re “going to the city” I know where they mean because everyone around here refers to one place in my state as “the city”, but whenever we’re not going there but to another city then we’ll use a nickname or just say the actual name if we’re not sure if the listener will be familiar with the nickname. Heck even in the town I live in a lot of neighborhoods aren’t referred to between locals by their names unless we think the listener doesn’t know the short-names for them. I have a friend that lives in a neighborhood called Willow Lake but people here just say “Oh I have a friend who lives in the Lake.” To another outsider that sounds crazy, but us locals understand. It’s fun knowing even ancient peoples were the same way.

Everything we know and use predominantly comes from 4 civilisation.. Persians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs. Who also took from each other mainly because they were around at the same time as each other and had some of the largest empires of their time.
