On January 3, 2022, her body was found in her parents' home, seated on the sofa in a very disturbing position—her body was practically "fused" to the furniture. The autopsy revealed a shocking picture of extreme neglect. Lacey weighed only about 43 kg (96 pounds) and had severe pressure ulcers, bone infections (osteomyelitis), and signs of prolonged malnutrition. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be septicemia (sepsis), resulting from a combination of immobility, malnutrition, and deep infections. Traces were also found on Lacey's body indicating that she had lived in that position for years: sofa wires adhered to her body, and even insect larvae (maggots) embedded in exposed parts of her bones. The autopsy report also indicated that there was feces and urine around her, and that parts of her body showed signs of infestation. According to the investigations, Lacey suffered from locked-in syndrome, a neurological condition in which the person is conscious but unable to move voluntarily, except for some muscles, such as those in the eyes. In addition, she had autism (Asperger's) and social anxiety, according to her parents. Reports indicate that she had not seen a doctor for almost 20 years—the last recorded appointment was in 2002, when she was 16 years old. Over time, the parents stopped seeking more in-depth help and limited themselves to giving her simple meals and a "makeshift toilet" near the sofa, according to the parents' lawyers. Lacey's living conditions were described as "silent suffering": although the parents claimed the house was clean, the sofa where Lacey lived was in a deplorable state, surrounded by feces, urine, and debris. Neighbors reported that the family traveled without notice and that she remained inert on the sofa even in their absence. Initially, the parents were indicted for second-degree murd3r. However, after negotiation, they pleaded "no contest" to the charge of m@nsl@ughter. In March 2024, Sheila and Clay Fletcher were convicted: each received a 20-year prison sentence plus 5 years of supervised release.
