@katiegrayofficial: Lots of nuance and intersectionality here but privilege is a big reason body ideals keep changing. #beautystandard #dietculture

I guess I know wealthy people of all shapes and sizes and they don’t really think about these things

The actual sign of privilege, health and discipline if muscle. Being fit is the actual wealth.

I really thought the new bodily status symbol was going to be muscle because you still can’t buy that, but I guess that clashes with the conservative view of femininity.

It’s interesting to me that ultra skinny has become popular when by far the hardest is being muscular yet still super lean. I think that may be next because that physique is very hard to achieve with ozempic, since it causes muscle wasting

Think this is very true. You missed the slim but curvy Kardashian era. But as soon as BBLs and implants became more accessible, that trend has faded too

I hate this is coming back. It creates such a bad precedent for young women. I was a teenager in the late 90s early 2000s when the tabloids were body shaming female pop stars.

I keep thinking that 'normal' bodies will come into fashion because now GLP1s make emaciation attainable for most people.

In my age group I’m seeing the ultra strong era. Older women, myself included are pumping weights harder than ever!☺️❤️💪

So if we look at history and who has promoted this, centuries ago, it was men because that was primarily who the artists were. Then the fashion industry was born, and it became the fashion industry who promoted it. And since consumerism is still so high, it is primarily the fashion industry, and the movie industry that promote this insidious self image.

All of this is true. But it also glosses over the intersection with white surpremacy and racism against black people, as well as the tendency for white culture to “try on” or consider “in” other world/race cultures. This happening concommitally with the fall of idealizing the stereotyped black body type, the rise in popularity of East Asian culture and beauty trends, and even more alarmingly with the current rise of white supremacist ideals in our society should not be overlooked.

It's also tied to sociopolitical trends. In very conservative times, markers of gender normativity get emphasized. Small and thin is associated with femininity and large and muscular is associated with masculinity generally. This goes to dress as well.

This also explains the campaign against lab diamonds… larger carat stones are much more accessible these days and that has threatened the previous perception of wealth attached to diamonds.
