as hr myself, I do call reference. sometimes I will just lookup the company hr number. and call them. cuz some candidate will put reference number of their friends or family. and ask them to act as the company

As a manager I take calls almost every time. I am rarely surprised when a staff member tells me they are leaving I know about a week before they get offered the job.
