I'm in Laie, Hawaii, and this temple built over a hundred years ago has a forgotten feature we almost never see today. And I think this rare feature found in only 8 temples can unlock our understanding of how the endowment helps us ascend back to God. . In the earliest Latter-day Saint Temples, you didn't experience the endowment ceremony on film and you didn't sit in one room the entire time. . The endowment was historically was performed live by ordinance workers and you would progress through five different rooms: The Creation Room, the Garden Room, the World Room, the Terrestrial Room, and the Celestial Room. . And most notably, every time you transitioned to a new room, you would often physically go higher. Each room had some steps between them. . This followed the pattern of Solomon's Temple, where walking deeper into the temple meant climbing higher with steps back to God. . In the Laie temple built in 1919, the Celestial Room is at the top and center of the temple, and historically when you did an endowment session, you would begin at the bottom in the Creation Room, and as you progressed from room to room, you actually spiraled upwards until making it to the top in the Celestial Room, symbolizing the presence of God. . This shows me that the endowment is about ascending spiritually, improving step by step in my life as I prepare to enter God's presence. . This pattern of ascent isn’t just in temples—it’s in scripture too.
