I agree that believing your work will simply “speak for itself” can be a career mistake. People have to know what you contribute, how you think, and whether they can trust you with greater responsibility. Relationships are part of that. But I’d also distinguish relationship-building from simply becoming well-connected or well-liked. Leadership readiness should still be demonstrated through judgment, accountability, communication, the ability to develop others, and how someone handles difficult situations. A strong network can create visibility and opportunity, but it shouldn’t be the thing that substitutes for actual leadership capability. The strongest position is having both: people who know your value and a body of work that proves it.

As someone who left a corporate job to be home with my kids, when I started back to “work” at a business. I read a lot, and have played the game as a female, 1. Dress Nice 2. Work hard 3. Network … this got me a promotion and a significant raise of about 30/40k because I networked outside of my department and made people’s lives easier. I’ll be doing this as soon as I get up and running again. It works

The more time I spend as a manager the more I agree with this. But this needs to start with good work regardless. There are too many people great at talking about their work but doing mediocre work that needs to be re-done later.
