This is triggering for me because my own mother struck me like that with a belt, pulled my hair and dug her nails behind my ear, threw sharp objects at me drawing quite a bit of blood, shoved me down stairs, and sometimes lock me in the basement for sometimes 2 days. I went to school with welts all over me. it was abuse. 100% abuse. healing is possible, not easy, but possible.

When I lived with my grandma, we had a wooden backscratcher that was used for punishment. 15 swats, 20, 30 - and even got 100 swats, and everytime I'd make a noise, it would start over.

As a child of the 60’s this is not new BUT it was just as wrong then as it is now!!! The church I grew up in, would alienate any parent that DID NOT use corporal punishment!! The more inventive the better!!

NOT justifying abuse of any capacity!!! But this is what seems to be a trend within churches that have no concept of grace and acceptance. People are shammed and condemned for sexuality, for life choices, for how their families act if it’s not perfect. U don’t fit into what the church wants of u perfectly? Creates insane amounts of pressure and people getting what they want or some version of it in HORRIFIC INEXCUSABLE WAYS!!!!! No excuses for these people ever. But there are reasonings (even inexcusable and not excuses but reasons) behind everything. No matter what reason, put them in jail. Churches preach grace and acceptance and love and condemn abuse way more than being different.

my grandma was like 80 and watching my brother and I. I was probably 8. we took off to go visit friends without telling her and I felt bad so I called her and told her where we were. it was late late and she said "get back here now!" so we started walking back to her house. (mind you my sister was out of state in the hospital which is why we were staying with grandma). she met my brother and I half way with a yard stick and walked behind us and wacked us with it every now and then on the way home. I still think that was appropriate. but what they did?! I'm so glad someone recorded it. disgusting.
