here's a better question, why are we running code meant for 95 98 on windows 10 even?

I’m starting to understand why Windows 11 runs so much slower on my brand new computer than Windows 7 did on my childhood family desktop

I doubt the story since binaries were not compatible. Win 9x was MSDOS based while a potential Win 9 would have been NT.

If this is true, why didn’t just market it as 9 and show it as 9 everywhere you could see it, but mark is as windows xyz in the code? Genuinely asking

Squirrel :
But how codes didn't mix 95 and 98 ? Are they use 1:1 codebase and drivers ?

this is not true... as after a certain point windows version was identified by the kernel version, not the os name 🤣
that's why, for a long time, many programs identified windows x64 edtion as server 2003

no this was just a rumor but a microsoft developer simply said that they chose 10 since it was the next big step for windows

Bad programming is not at all surprising. Their first operating system was literally called "Quick & Dirty OS", and they didn't even make it themselves, just bought it from some dude who programmed it in his garage. 🥀

If that was the case a much easier solution would be not start with 9. Windows09... problem solved 🤣

Urban legend. It’s neat you tried to make content. You even got background music to work.

I would not necessarily call it lazy. Microsoft said in 95 that from that point onwards all their products would use the release year as the version number. Calling people lazy for acting on information provided is not fair.

then give it a different way of calling it windows 9. call it windows IX or something

Those are just brand names... There is no correlation between the brand name and the internal versioning. Windows 8.1 was actually version 6.3, for example.
