@cbsmiami: After nearly three decades in South Florida, 32-year-old Edrisse Michelin has been deported to a country he says “does not feel like home.” He grew up in Miami, earned a license as a realtor and insurance broker, and lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident — until a conviction for illegally obtaining a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in 2020 led to 25 months in federal prison, followed by nine months in ICE custody. His deportation flight to Cap-Haïtien was “painful and dehumanizing,” he recalled, with shackled hands and feet and warnings of what to do in the event of a crash. Once released there, he and his wife, an American citizen, reunited — now facing the hardship of rebuilding a life in a land that feels both familiar and foreign. With Temporary Protected Status for Haitians in the U.S. set to end soon for many, Michelin worries that others could share his fate. He and his wife strive to reunite with their eight children, though securing visas is difficult.

Respect is due for his accepting his failures, and he's lucky that his wife stands on business and does not cower. She’s the definition of a life partner.
