For example they might be over worked, stressed, struggle with organisation or time management. Whilst you can hold compassion for this, it doesn’t take away the impact this has on you. When a manager shows up like this the challenge for you is how you get your needs met. As demonstrated in this video I would recommend choosing the right moment (i.e. not at the peak of their stress) and speaking to them about how you can best work more effectively. I brought up that our manager doesn’t do any of the things he says he will do, so he got annoyed and cancelled everyone’s one to ones and and hasn’t rescheduled anyone’s since. This was in December.

At the top of our 1:1 I asked if we could focus on things we need to communicate about in order for our check ins to be quick and effective. We don’t always need to use the full 30 minutes so if he focuses on me & my work at the scheduled time, we can be as efficient as possible!

Well, this isn’t a good example to compare because the boss is a lot calmer in the second scenario so it’s not a fair comparison. The boss should be just as chaotic and the second scene.

Urgh I’m that manager and it does my head in. I used to be a manager - like that was my job - so not doing 1:1s etc was insane as that was literally my job. Now my job is 99%task, so I have zero time for my team. They are needy and don’t get better as I don’t have time to support them. Drives me mad
