Some 16-17 year olds have to fend for themselves, they deserve to be paid the same as someone who’s 21+ if they’re doing the same job

if your business can't afford to pay someone minimum wage then you don't have a functional business. Try harder, innovate, diversify. Do better. Don't rely on keeping people in poverty to keep your business afloat.

Agreed. Nobody will give youngsters a chance now. Add the new workers rights bill and employers are running a mile.

My apprentice who is turning 21 in feb 2026 will be due to be paid £12.21 an hour he’s 2nd year apprentice and the 6th apprentice electrician I have trained. That’s nearly £100 a day 1 of those day he is in college. Now this is becoming a problem for me and hiring apprentices in trades is already in a bad place

My kids work in our local pub…they thought the increase was great until the penny dropped that the pub would run leaner and they will have less shifts

Raising the minimum wage increases costs for small businesses, especially through higher employer National Insurance. which can lead to reduced hours, higher prices, or fewer jobs. Increasing the tax free threshold, however, boosts workers take home pay without raising employer costs, making it a cleaner way to help low‑income earners.

Correct, our company won’t take young people on . We can’t compress our wage structure. When someone leaves we do not replace. It’s survival mode only while it lasts. 12 months closure plan being considered.

as an employer who do you take on in a job role someone fresh out of school or someone with years of experience. it's a no brainer for me as a boss.
