Looks like the ceramic fiber mat that protects the substrate from vibration. If it was misplaced during assembly, it could block the second cat when it came loose.

Your videos are so helpful.Thank you ! Would it be fair to say that modern new vehicles are built with a lower standard of quality just so they need to be replaced more often?

So the repair is to replace the cat converter and the cost? would like to know.

Too lean mixture, overheating and melting of the catalytic converter.

So this is an extremely expensive fix and now gas engines are going to add particulate filters like diesel engines? The repair shops must be salivating at the repair bills for those things.
Protective filter probably dropped in during manufacturing. Just guessing.

Under 80,000 and eight years the dealer must replace the catalytic converters. Its federal law. Have forced several dealers to comply.

Had to replace mine at 120,000 miles. 1660.00 part only at dealership. Ebay less the 100.00 delivered. No problems at 40,000 miles on it. Shop charged 175.00 in replacing it.

it's just a glorified filter that plugs up eventually. and ruins your engine in the process

The warranty’s only usually cover the tiniest things anyway.. the easy fixes… The circular pattern and resulting material breakdown are typically caused by:
Excessive Heat: An engine problem, such as consistent misfires or an overly rich fuel-air mixture, causes unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system. This fuel ignites inside the catalytic converter, creating extremely high, localized temperatures that can melt the ceramic substrate in a concentrated area, often a circular spot. The resulting molten material then cools into a hard mass, or breaks apart, and the high carbon content from the incomplete combustion creates the "carbon-like" appearance.

That’s what I love about Texas. Don’t have to worry about converters. We just drill ours out and weld plates over the drill holes
