I've noticed this as well! I gravitated towards people who treated me poorly and said really mean stuff because it fit really well with how I viewed myself. Now I have developed a low tolerance for that. Not sure if I'm great at accepting a compliment yet, but at least I'm not with people who actively try to bring me down 😮💨

I'm sorry your parents said that to you, my parents have too and ✨️it sucks✨️and it's altered my sense of self in the most fundamental way, but it's made me do the scary thing and seek the very opposite of them in romantic relationships, and it's been overwhelmingly positive. The radical change went a long way to healing that because I met them with "idk if you're being honest when you're kind" and it made them affirm it in action and not only words 🫶
