🏛️ Ancient Greece: a civilization that shaped the West 🪙 🇬🇷 Ancient Greece was a civilization formed by several independent city-states, called poleis, located on the Balkan Peninsula, the Aegean islands, and the coast of Asia Minor. Each polis had its own government and way of life, with Athens and Sparta being the most influential: Athens stood out for the creation of direct democracy, as well as for its development of arts and philosophy; Sparta built a militarized society, based on discipline and the training of warriors. Greek society was highly hierarchical. Citizens were free men with political rights; women and metics (foreign residents) had limited roles; and slaves supported much of the economy. Despite their differences, the Greeks shared a common language, common festivals, and a shared religious tradition characterized by polytheism. Their mythology featured gods such as Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and Aphrodite, who represented natural forces and human traits, serving to explain the world and guide moral values. Greece was also the birthplace of Western philosophy. Thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle created intellectual foundations that still influence logic, ethics, politics, and science today. Other philosophical schools, such as Stoicism, Cynicism, and Epicureanism, emerged from these traditions, offering different views on happiness, virtue, and human behavior. Culturally, the Greeks made major advances in art, architecture, and theater. Temples like the Parthenon reflected ideals of proportion and harmony. Playwrights such as Sophocles and Aristophanes created tragedies and comedies that remain universal references. In sports, events like the Olympic Games celebrated unity and competition among the poleis. Greek history was also marked by important conflicts. The Greco-Persian Wars put the Greeks against the powerful Persian Empire, strengthening their sense of shared identity. The Peloponnesian War, between Athens and Sparta, deeply weakened the Greek world. Shortly after, Macedonia, led by Alexander the Great, unified and expanded Greek territories, creating a vast empire that spread Greek culture across regions of Asia and North Africa. This period, known as the Hellenistic era, mixed Greek elements with local traditions, extending Greek influence for centuries. The legacy of Ancient Greece is immense.
