Not. Padrinos and Madrinas ain't the same as Sponsor. Padrinos and Madrinas can be Sponsors. But Sponsors not equal to Padrinos and Madrinas. Padrinos and Madrinas are usually the parents best friends or people really really really close to the family. The context in where Padrinos and Madrinas is used, usually falls into "sponsoring" your 15 Años, Graduation Party, Primera Comunión or some type of "Big step" or achievement. Because they're named your padrino and madrina during your Primera cumunion. So it is 95% a religious thing. Also they give you gifts throughout the rest of your life. That's why in Spanish we have specific words derived from them. When talking about them we don't say Patrocinar (sponsor) we say Apadrinar.
