CS enrollment is down everywhere. There’s gonna be a huge glut of job openings from a generation that basically didn’t bother with it because it was “cooked”

CS sophomore right now, if you’re naturally interested in compsci as a whole you don’t have to worry about not getting a job. The competition is 90% students who do nothing outside of class, and 10% students who take the time to learn modern tools and frameworks, software engineering principles, etc. You just have to be confident in your ability to learn and build, and you’ll be ahead of the majority

CS majors I’ve met are changing to EE or ME. Most CS majors also don’t practice their skills outside of class assignments too. A lot of low quality over-saturation.

That’s not technically how the wave works with the supply and demand of software engineers works. Tech is a little unique in that aspect. I encourage anyone reading this who’s still in undergrad and contemplating on switching majors to pay attention. Software and hardware engineering work in intervals. When software reaches its apex capabilities and hardware is the constraint. There becomes a new demand for hardware engineers, and vice versa. Essentially, when considering what you want to study. You need to follow the trends. If you’re entering first year of college at the peak of a software cycle. Your best bet is to study electrical engineering, computer engineering, materials engineering, or physics. There’s a few others too. If a software cycle has peaked your first year. You can bet a hardware cycle will start as soon as you graduate college in 3-4 years. If you know for a fact that you absolutely want to do software but enjoy hardware. Always do computer engineering. You can always get a masters in computer science if you feel it’s necessary. Hope this helps.

The issue with cs is students think it’s a practical degree to teach you to be a software engineer, which is not true at all. CS is an extremely abstract degree that teaches you a lot of theory and math. CS teaches valuable skills way farther than the software field. I did CS and ended in a business job, and I feel my background has allowed me to excel.

Ngl people need to practice outside of classes and try projects by themselves to feel decent in CS. You can’t just hop in and expect to learn coding, you have to at least try bro

at my university for my class there r 100+ cs majors. for the year below me there are only 30😭 i think its unsaturating but unsure if this is a national trend

So what you’re saying is if I’m a senior in highschool that wants to go into comp sci, by the time I graduate theoretically I should have a lot of opportunities?

I’m a CE major previously CS. My only hope to switch to EE is if I can transfer. Am I cooked if I stay as a CE?

People need to get in the niches of cs not go into the same pure web dev or software which is where everyone going into. There’s niches and bridge type jobs. But you need to research about them to even know they exist 😅
