Paul schrader is such an underrated figure in the world of American cinema with existential driven classics like this film and first reformed as well as being screenplay writer for some Scorsese’s best films (taxi driver/raging bull/bringing out dead). He beautifully portrays Mishima’s intricate Japanese prose in stunning set pieces and cinematography that no other biopic film even comes close to. Also shoutout to Phillip glass for introducing me to world of classical minimalism.

The soundtrack is incredible. The different variations of the same motifs create their own arc. The theme that plays when the temple burns starts off solemn but then quickly speeds up when the match is lit, like the beginnings of the truth mishima realizes. The last day track is a giant and bombastic score, meant to encapsulate the magnum opus of mishima, his very own life. Such a beautiful film and score.
