Ask them if they want to see the counselor, if they say yes, take them there, if no, dont. (tried making world peace)

Today i went to the nurses office bc i was crying and i wanted to calm down and i couldnt bc the counselor came in amd she was pushing for me to tell her what was wrong and why i was crying and it made me cry more and she said “do i have to call your parents?” Im 18 and a senior. I told her that i was overwhelmed with everything and she kept pushing to get it out and I didn’t want to talk about it.

Nope. I teach kindergarten. They literally cry when I ask them not to bring leaves and rocks inside.😆

No. My rule is if they’re a functioning cryer, they don’t need to see me

No!!! I work in a high school. Teens cry sometimes. They don't always need to talk about it. Sometimes they just need to have their moment then move on with their day. Definitely not an automatic referral.

as a middle schooler i think it depends on why the student is crying if they are open and able to talk about it then yes of course but if they are being forced or the teacher that they had previously just is like “no go” then no

No!!! Crying isn’t a crisis, it’s a coping skill.

I think it doesn’t necessarily mean they specifically need to see a counselor, but as a sub sometimes it is hard to prevent comments and interjections from unrelated kids so it is good to give the kid space away from others to collect themselves even if it’s not a crisis. Like if that was happening to an adult at work, they would be perfectly within their rights to go chill in their car or smthg for a min, kids deserve that kind of privacy too, and sometimes a supportive adult can be helpful especially if it’s not tied to disciplinary action bc often that’s not an appropriate solution

I teach elementary, and I have referred a student to the counselor because she was crying multiple times a day every day over very minor issues. So it was concerning, but I wouldn’t say just crying sometimes requires a counselor!

From my experience, School counselors are incompetent. They are not trained in any way to handle emotions, school counselors only know how to help with college and even then I don’t think i actually spoke to a counselor more than twice my entire high school experience. But this was 5 years ago so maybe things in schools are different now

depends on the age and past factors that would concern me or not. a student regulating emotions? not always. a student who.never cries? probably

I think they should, but I don’t think they should get forced to talk to a counselor. I think they should just get a space where they can calm down away from everyone else.
