Kitain Temple, located in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, is a historically significant Buddhist temple affiliated with the Tendai sect. Founded in 830 AD by the monk Ennin under the order of Emperor Junna, it was originally part of a three-temple complex known as Muryoju-ji, comprising Kita-in (North Temple), Naka-in (Middle Temple), and Minami-in (South Temple). 🛕 The temple suffered destruction by fire in 1202 but was rebuilt in 1296 under Emperor Fushimi. To aid in its restoration, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered the transfer of several structures from Edo Castle to Kitain. These buildings, including reception rooms, a study, kitchen, bathroom, and the room where Iemitsu was born, are now the only surviving remnants of the original Edo Castle. 🏯 A notable feature of Kitain Temple is its collection of 540 Rakan statues, representing the disciples of Buddha. Carved between 1782 and 1825, each statue displays unique expressions and poses, reflecting various facets of human experience. 🗿🙏 Visitors can also explore the Jigen-do Hall, dedicated to Tenkai, and the Senba Tosho-gu shrine, enshrining the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
