My grandfather was a veterinarian. He used to make people sign an authorization that stated if the animal is found to be in good health with no obvious reason for the euthanasia that the owners were surrendering it and the clinic would take responsibility for rehoming

I just dug a grave for one of my dogs that passed today. Anyone that does what he is talking about that should be required to dig graves for dogs and cats that pass at local animal shelters, with nothing but their hands.

Yeah...one of of the things I learned when I was trying to be a vet tech is just how far the legality of pets as property goes. It boggles my mind that we have laws against animal mistreatment but it's perfectly legal to put your pet down for any reason you want.

we just adopted this baby on Sunday! not an old man but he's from the shelter! 11 m/o and someone left this sweet baby. he bonded to me and the wife immediately.

In April we had an owner bring in a 14y old Bangle Cat wanting to euthanize, we refused, I offered to take the cat off her hands and she sighed release of ownership papers. He just turned 15 last month and is so affectionate. My boyfriend named him Steve French.

Remind me of how one of my friends got his pupper. Couple years ago in March or April a family relinquished their dog because “they didn’t expect it to get so large”. It was a Labrador that they got as a puppy for Christmas.

Used to know a vet that would check the chip data before all euthanasia (unless it was completely medically necessary) because they found several dogs that had been stolen and then the people who stole them couldn't afford the medical care

Many vets will have the owner just sign the dog over and one of the staff will keep or rehome it. My ex wife brought home several animals this way.

My wife is a vet tech. They will refuse conveynce euths. Say a parent goes to a nursing home and the kids don’t want the animal, people can surrender it and they will take it to a shelter. But she will refuse them if they can’t find any reason to do it.

I have a basset hound and this pisses me off to no end. Yeah, he can be chill but he’s got his moments of high energy. Best dog I ever had, and I’ve owed a lot of hounds the last 25 years of my life. I don’t blame John one bit, I’d do the same.

I have two Basset Hounds and they are adorable, wonderful dogs. Very sociable as well, that dog would have loved having a friend in that Terrier. What an awful person to put one down. While they do average 10-12 years they can get to 16 regularly. I've heard of some being 19 or 20 even.
