I live in Montana- when the wind chill is -55 F with blowing snow chickens have to have food and water in the coop.

My hens, about six of them, together with one rooster prefer to sleep on top of the barn in the cold instead of going into the coop with the others. I’ve tried everything to get them inside, including a heat lamp and other methods, but they just won’t go in. They basically do whatever they want.

We free range, and live in the armpit of North Dakota that gets to be -20 at normal winter days. They get 1/2 the barn and their food and water HAVE to be in the barn.

I switched to a panel heater after my poor hens tail feathers got singed by a heat lamp 😭 She was just standing right against it. I'm glad I was there to help her before her feathers caught fire.
