@bradygraffiti_corgis: I know everyone adores the classic “chonky corgi” look…but their health has to come first. When I got their dna/health test results back, I learned things I couldn’t ignore. Brady tested positive for two genetic markers for both IVDD (a spinal disc condition common in long-back breeds like corgis) and DM (a neurologic disease seen in many senior dogs). Graffiti also has one marker for each. Markers don’t mean a dog absolutely will develop these conditions, but having two markers instead of one generally indicates a higher genetic risk, which is why I take Brady’s results so seriously. I learned that maintaining good muscle mass and a healthy weight are key to the prevent the disease from developing…and so far, so good with Brady at 11 and Graffiti at 8 ❤️
Don’t let the overweight dog moms get you down! Corgi obesity is way too normalized and I for one am glad to see them a healthy weight! I’m always doing things with my dogs to curb their obedience

They’re the perfect size now. Our girl is that size and she’s perfectly healthy in fact our vet is very happy with her weight as corgis are prone to back issues so having too much weight can cause MAJOR problems with their backs/spines and joints. We are so sick of people commenting on how “skinny” our girl is. She’s perfect! ❤️

To be clear, DM is completely avoidable through health testing. Brady’s breeder should never have bred the parents together. I’m glad you’re taking such good care of them but the blame lies with the breeder.

Can you share what you feed them? My boy is 9. We got him fixed at about 4-5years old and since then it’s been so hard to manage his weight. I’ve tried making homemade dog food. Now doing The Honest Kitchen food. I know my husband sneaks in treats (that’s an ongoing battle).

IVDD will be flagged on every corgi ever born… the only place that actually tests the markers is UC Davis. It’s a $50 test. Other places just flag breeds with achondroplasia. All that being said…a healthy weight is ALWAYS beneficial.

As someone who rescued a corgi who was too well loved by her elderly owner, her entire personality and quality of life changed when I got her down to a normal weight. She was already 10, but played with dogs half her age for as long as you'd let her ❤️
