We suffer because of the stories we keep telling ourselves. If the story running through your mind is a story of pain, rejection, abandonment, betrayal, or being discarded like a piece of trash, then your body is going to keep living inside that pain. But you have the free will to choose a new perception. You have a choice in whether or not you keep feeding the suffering. And if you were the savior, the empath, the one who showed up when they were broken — and then they left once they were stronger — there may be no pain quite like that. Because you know your heart was pure. You helped them when they were at their lowest. You loved them when they were hard to love. You saw something in them they could not yet see in themselves. And when they walked away, it may have felt like you were discarded. But “I was discarded like trash” is a story of suffering. It keeps your nervous system trapped in humiliation, rage, grief, and abandonment. So give your body a new story. Say this every day. Say it every time your mind goes into anger, rage, depression, obsession, or the old wound. “We saved each other. We loved each other. We are both evolving independently of each other at this time.
