There are set standards of the known viral strands based on pairs. Some viruses are DNA based and some are RNA based. For example (very basic explanation) known bird flu is ABCABC and Covid is AECAEC. If we run the appropriate blot test and it shows ABCACB we say it’s new bird flu. And then it’s compared to strands that were common in the veterinary list. And if ABCACBwas seen for decades in birds or cats or anything and not recorded in humans we then say it’s transferable now.

It’s actually not problematic (from virology teacher) it’s an old strain and cannot be spread from person to person :)
