LLMs don’t “think” or “reason,” they are word predictors, just like a calculator is a number predictor. A system like ChatGPT (despite how convinced some people are that it has an opinion) is a tool built with an intended purpose. Every bit of information on how to use it, it’s cautions or disclaimers, all there clear as day on the website. In this case a young kid (who required closer supervision) basically began using it as an over-qualified Ouiji board and deduced from it his own form of truth, however my bet is that if he’d used an actual Ouiji board to meet the same fate, no one would be blaming Hasbro for making it or a toy store for selling it.
