I felt pretty undecided about the book until CM interviewed X’s first wife. What the ex-wife said shifted my perspective of X and CM’s dynamic. Then X’s final exhibition truly stocked me

I recently bought this book & think this was the push I needed to pick it up! I haven’t heard it summarised like this before and am now even more fascinated by it!

excellent summary! i also admired its ambition—& damn can she write. i did feel her appropriation of connie converse went too far. & after a while X felt strangely one-dimensional (odd considering her many personas); more of a trope vs. a real character. but i still stan lacey as a writer

I remember the buzz when this came out and I was always a tiny bit apprehensive, honestly. So I am happy to be seeing this today. Thank you! 👏

This is the best book I read this year and maybe even the past five years and I think the murkiness of the ethics makes it even better?

I loved the alternate history background d also. Like I could have read another book just about the history of the world.

There was many times I was reading this that I had to remind myself it wasn’t a real biography

Given Kathy Acker’s preference for pastiche, she is a murky case study when weighing the moral ambiguity of art inspired by other people’s lives and work.
