Steve volunteering for dangerous jobs isn’t new, he’s done it for five seasons. The only new factor is that this is the first time he’s done it with Jonathan around. It’s not Steve’s fault or responsibility that Jonathan interprets Steve always stepping up as some attempt to impress Nancy. Steve does it whether Nancy’s there or not. It’s Jonathan’s insecurity that turns it into a competition, like when he jumped in beside Steve after Steve volunteered to climb the tower. Same with the flowers, Steve was genuinely concerned and said they should BOTH go check on her, and Jonathan twisted it again and blew up at him. Steve matched his energy, called him out, and told him he's being a pothead wirdo, and to focus on HER instead of him. He literally gives HIM advice. Steve genuinely looks confused when Jonathan accuses him of trying to impress Nancy or of constantly one-upping him. It really seemed like Steve had no idea what Jonathan was even talking about.
