This scene holds up insanely well visually for being released in 99. The sound design is unmatched and it’s just so fun

There were stores for Bose audio that would take customers into a screening room to show you this sequence to try and sell you a surround sound system. It worked on my parents.

there's things that's he's really good at, but dialogue and blocking for those scenes... it's pretty bad.

Menace is peak Star Wars as far as the look and feel.

I will die on the hill that George is the most important storyteller of the 20th century. His Star Wars films, all 6 of them, are some of the most artistically pure films ever made, I can and will die on this hill.

dont forget that he made the choice to NOT have a score for the race until the end of it, which goes against one of the things that made the OG one special. The pods are the score and helps you get immersed.

One of my favorite parts of TPM is when Qui-Gon fights Maul in the desert and we get these fantastic close-ups of the sabers clashing and Maul’s cloak flapping in the wind.

One of those pods sounds like a broken vacuum cleaner… which is brilliant.

YES. Astounding director. The way he builds movement and tension within the frame, rather than trying to frantically move the frame itself, is incredible.

What we really needed (and still need) is for a whole movie revolving around a Star Wars Gran Prix rather than just making it a subplot- and ideally it would be his to make

I rewatch this specific scene every couple of months because it’s some of the best sound design I’ve ever heard. I just love the sound of the pod racers man.

The prequels are exactly how George Lucas wanted them and they tell the perfect story for what he wanted to tell. how traumatized people are easy to abuse by authority figures pretending to have their best interests at heart.
The Jedi and even Obi-Wan mostly put Anakin down in episode 2. that where we see his relationship with the Chancellor develop. He is given positive reinforcement from the Chancellor and no one else. Obi-Wan tells him he's proud of him I think 3 times through AotC. Every other interaction is Obi-Wan being harsh or sarcastic. Makes it easy for Anakin to not believe him. Every other Jedi is the same or worse to him. It's no wonder he was so susceptible to the grooming.
In 3, we see some of the jedi respect him more, but that's for his prowess, not his understanding of the Jedi. And Palpatine continues to manipulate the situation to drive a wedge further between Anakin and the Jedi and build his frustration with the order with his play to get him on the council. And continues to be the most positive relationship in his life. Him betraying the Order is the only outcome. It's masterful storytelling. I refuse to accept prequel slander

Lucas is an awful director. what you meant to say is that Ben Burtt is an awesome sound designer.
Lucas' contribution is Anakin's mom cringing while watching a screen. basically anything that's uncomfortable is what Lucas did.
