the way he also runs at the white dog at the end? seems like the dog isn’t fully reliable to listen to commands and could very easily hurt the little dog that walked past or one of the older people whilst trying to get to the other dog. totally irresponsible imo

There’s so many leashes that would allow you to practice a down stay in public too. So many training leashes out there are for this sort of thing specifically and are also designed to give you control of your dog.

My Aussie is selective and will react to some dogs. A dog like that who stares him and our female Aussie down would set him off. This would end badly for us. We never have our Aussies off their leashes though and when we see other dogs or humans approach we stop and ask our Aussies to sit next to us and face us or away from the stimulation until it is gone. We use high value treats as rewards for calm behavior and our Aussies know “look at mama” translates to “look at mama and then get an amazing piece of dried duck”.

This! Also you can train your dog on a longer leash? I have a little sausage dog and the amount of times she’s been knocked over (and cried!) is ridic. They usually say ‘oh he’s friendly’ how do you expect a big dog and a tiny one to play safely? My dog is super nervous and just wants to be left alone not traumatised 😭

our rule off leash, is if anyone comes near or in eye sight, the dogs come to me and sit. I even hold collars typically just to make the other people feel comfortable for when the pass. its not others people's job to guess and hope my dog is well trained. and sometimes people want to pet them, especially the dane. which is fine but her procedure is to let people come to her, then she can get all the loving. but with a dog that size, it's terrifying to many people. even if she is the sweetest, they don't know that and shouldn't have to risk it if she isn't.

csnt stand this behsviour. Just coz you can doesn't mean you should. all of mine will do down stay but always go back on a lead. its irrelevant the size BTW, I own large breeds, small dogs are equally an issue.
