I was reading too many nonfiction books in hs (astronomy, investment, self help, biographies) that I did poorly in the English part of SAT bcs the vocabulary was confusing. I couldnt understand the passages of the classic literature books in the test at all. I didnt read Shakespeare in hs bcs I thought romance was useless and I just read for knowledge. Now as an adult I read a lot of Dostoyevsky and I feel like I started too late on literature (I still dont wanna read Shakespeare, bcs Im still not interested in romance)

I'm from Russia, and we have a concept of "intelligentsia" – people who are not wealthy, but work in higher education, music, journalism, science. It's rooted in Soviet times. These people would be very educated and cultural, but they would live in government distributed apartments, dressing and eating just as the working class. But because they had knowledge and ideas, government often was suspicious of them, and common people were kind of contemptuous, thinking that they were too stuck up.

I was a student in elite institutions in France and the UK and I do believe I come from petit bourgeoisie (engineer parents but farmer grandparents) and I actually really enjoyed learning about the rich’s way of like. Yes it’s a lot to learn but I accepted that I am not part of this group and I just learn about wine and fashion and how to behave at a ballet for fun and to have these unique experiences ! Anyways my accent will always make it clear I’m not from that background so I have nothing to loose lol

My parents did me a huge favor by surrounding me with books and art and taking me to museums and galleries. They carefully taught me to develop my own taste. From them I learned to read every plaque carefully and to say if I don't like some hyped piece of art or some must have item even though everyone else around me is thinking that I'm a pleb for not liking it. I'm far from rich, fashionable or trendy, but I have confidence and thanks to my parents, I'm well read and cultured. I love the opera, not because I want to climb on social ladder, but because I genuinely love it. I usually get long looks from the people who play the social game because I can't afford to buy fancy clothes, but I don't care. I'm there for the opera ❤️
