@nursehadley: I think a big part of the no-contact conversation that is missing is the back-and-forth that many adult children have when they decide to go no-contact. I was no-contact from the ages of 19 to 21, decided to forgive and try again, and ended up no-contact again at 26. I wanted to believe that people can change, grow, and that the second time around things would be different. However, I was cautious the second time around and when I came to the realization that nothing had actually changed and nothing was ever going to, I had to make the difficult decision to go no-contact again. When I say a million cuts that bled me dry, it means that I can’t possibly sum up 26 years, the conflicting feelings, and the second chances into a few sentences and I think many other no-contact children probably feel the same as I do. #nocontact #oprah #oprahpodcast

I think our parents are the roughest generation in the worst way. They lack emotional maturity and are entitled and cruel. We have to break the cycle.

I woke up one day and was done. he had killed every feeling I had one tiny, insult and criticism at a time. there was nothing good and nothing worth saving so I walked away

If you had a spouse for 30 or 40 years that mentally and emotionally abused, people would ask why didn't you leave them a long time ago. Being a parent doesn't give you a pass to treat your children the same way and be surprised that they had the strength to walk away

I estranged myself from my mother for the same reasons. She passed when we weren't talking and with her passing, it has actually allowed me to heal because the weight feels lifted.

I’m no contact with my mom. If I could describe it to anyone, I could compare it to how older people talk about divorce. It wasn’t necessarily one thing that she did but one day she did something that broke everything down. And I was just done and ready to move on with my life. I’ve heard people describe divorce in that way. But unlike marriage, you don’t get to choose your parent.

That’s always how I’ve described it. Death by 1000 paper cuts. I almost wish there was a “big event” bc maybe then people wouldn’t be so quick to say “but that’s your parent” they killed every ounce of love, respect and affection I held for them one cut at a time until there was simply nothing left but pain. Enough was enough. My life is the most peaceful it’s ever been and I regret nothing about my decision.

this was incredibly well spoken. I’m slowly cutting my family off and from the outside people would say “what? why?” when in reality it’s a million cuts. Wishing peace 💓

It is absolutely death by a thousand cuts. By the time an adult child gets to the point of no contact, they’ve tried a thousand ways a thousand times for years and decades to save the relationship and it becomes a decision of personal peace and preservation. It’s an incredibly painful last resort and calling it a “trend” minimizes the years of effort spent from the child trying to make the relationship work. No one wakes up one day deciding to cut off one of the most primal relationships; no contact is usually the very last resort. I fantasize about having the kind of mother/daughter relationship I see other women have with their moms. I tried for 20+ years. My mom is simply incapable of having that relationship. That loss is incredibly painful.
