I love the added layer of it being Mary Magdalen so so much. She is one of those biblical figures that I think about so often and the contrast of the Mary’s just adds such depth to the contrast of the wives and Handmaids. Margaret Atwood is a genius m.

I’d like to give one of my theories about the red. Mary Magdalene wore red because that’s what all “harlots” wore during those times. You even have some Pentecostal Christians today that say wearing red, EVEN RED UNDERGARMENTS, is a sin because of that and “you shouldn’t have the appearance of evil and tempt men” (I only mention Pentecostals because I am Pentecostal and experienced that first hand) I think that kind of shows that’s how they truly saw handmaids

I just had a thought about the colour: Because red also symbolises danger, the handmaid's are in constant danger if they don't conform. They're cloaked in warning and danger, emphasising that they cannot escape or they will face the consequences

The Red reminds me of The Scarlet Letter and many of the Handmaids are put in that position as punishment for their perceived crimes before Gilead. These crimes were usually something related to sex; promiscuity, prostitution, adultery, homosexuality or abortion.
