@bonemuseum: Leontiasis ossea is a rare condition that dramatically transforms the skull and left this individual with one of the most dramatic cranial deformities ever recorded. This specimen isn’t just visually striking; it’s historically important. It was extensively documented during the 19th century, with physicians publishing detailed case notes, illustrations, and follow-up observations. Because of that, this skull is now one of the best-recorded medical specimens in The Bone Museum’s collection. In today’s video, we explore some of the patient’s medical history. Cases like this are a reminder of how rare diseases can leave profound skeletal signatures, and how historical medical records help us reconstruct the lives behind the bones.
