🌘🌚🌛The Moon is not a perfect sphere; it's more like a lemon, with flattened poles and bulges around the equator. It also has its own "moonquakes," is drifting away from Earth at about \(3.8\) cm per year, and has a very thin atmosphere. We see the Moon because its dark surface reflects sunlight, and the different phases we see are due to varying angles of sunlight. The Moon is not round, but has a lemon-like shape with flattened poles and bulges around its equator. The Moon has a very tenuous atmosphere made of gases like helium, neon, and argon, which offers no protection from radiation or meteoroids. The Moon experiences seismic activity called "moonquakes," recorded by seismometers left by Apollo astronauts. Its surface is covered in mountains, craters, and flat plains of hardened lava called "seas". Temperatures vary drastically, from \(134^{\circ }C\) (\(273^{\circ }F\)) on the sunlit side to \(-153^{\circ }C\) (\(-243^{\circ }F\)) on the night side. The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth at a rate of about \(3.8\) cm per year. This is slowly making days on Earth longer. The leading theory is that a Mars-sized object named Theia collided with Earth, and the Moon formed from the resulting debris. The Moon does not produce its own light. What we see is sunlight reflecting off its dark surface.Phases: The Moon's phases change as different amounts of its sunlit surface become visible from Earth due to the changing angles of the Sun's light. The same side of the Moon always faces Earth because Earth's gravity has locked the Moon's rotation, a phenomenon known as tidal locking.
