In reality, the fluid is precisely engineered to work at peak efficiency when mixed in a specific ratio (typically 50% distilled water and 50% concentrate). Ignoring this ratio or using excessive tap water will harm the engine. What Happens When Coolant is Over-diluted or Tap Water is Used? Reduced Anti-corrosion Protection: Coolant contains chemical inhibitors to prevent rust and corrosion on internal metal components. Over-dilution reduces this anti-corrosion protection. This leads to premature wear and the formation of damaging rust and sludge inside the cooling system. Compromised Thermal Properties: The proper mixture is what maintains the optimal operating temperature by raising the boiling point and lowering the freezing point. Excessive water reduces the effectiveness of these thermal properties, increasing the risk of overheating in summer conditions.
