The ones you cut up are not astringent. The ones that are more acorn shaped are astringent and will turn you inside out unless they are dead ripe.

When they are ripe (soft to touch), stick them in the freezer for a few hours so slushy forms. It is the best frozen treat. I grew up eating them and my dad always eats them half frozen
