I learnt the 3 fingers used to cross yourself are the 3 distinct persons from the Trinity, and the other 2 fingers are adam and eve.When Jesus is depicted he is the Thumb and adam is the ring finger and in the icon Jesus touches the thumb to the ring finger, having a beautiful meaning of Jesus bringing salvation to man (everyone).
