Are these studies done in multiple countries / cultures? 53% of Americans are morons based on the last election.

As an older GenX father? My son was born when I was 40. My only goal is to make a better human than myself. I raised him watching documentaries, and reading as many books, even audible books. I’ve strive to teach him critical, thinking. My son is now a junior five AP classes including physics and trigonometry, and basic Spanish. He has a 3.5 grade average. He’s a curious and empathetic human. I couldn’t be more proud.

Could it be due to a growing focus on STEM subjects and a reduction for those creative arts that can teach abstraction, connection and diversity in a way logic can't?

The US school system was and is designed to teach impressionable young people to be obedient workers. Our entire way of living, our society needs a complete overhaul and shift.

The more you do the signature “snap” the more fluid and natural it becomes. I’d think nothing of it had I not been present (virtually) since its inception.

More intelligent? No - we’re about as a good as we’ve always been. Access to more stuff, sure, but that’s not necessarily intelligence.

Yes, the problem is that you don’t want a generalist to fly your plane, build your bridge or make an important diagnostic to your life…we need these narrow specialists to the detriment of their personal realities.

I think we need to have a better metric for intelligence than IQ before doing this kind of study. IQ can be good to find a very particular type of logical thinking but it completely omits things like information retention, lateral thinking, creative thinking, emotional intelligence etc…

bro, by the looks of your ring collection i’m certain you’re a blast to shop with. on topic, if we could evolve critical thinking skills in the US political landscape i’d sleep a hell of a lot better

I got an “IQ test” as a child. One of the questions was: “Who was the first sultan of the ottoman empire?” ..like thats literally just data. What are we testing here??☠️

Rachel, I think I understand the point about hyperspecialisation, but I am unsure about IQ. Is the concept of IQ reliable? Has it changed over time? We seem to have divided intelligence into many types, I think. Can you give me some more information on this?

I don't know where this comes from but hyperspecialisation reminds me the saying that academia is about "knowing more and more about less and less until you know everything about nothing".

Random Q inspired by this video: do you think education curriculums capitalize on our IQ for optimizing our inherent intelligence? (I hope that makes sense)

I think its also a cultural change that we dont demand much from kids these days. Like " its okay you failed the test, thank you for participating". Before if you failed a test you had to redo until its good enough. Now thers more and more kids who cannot even read
