Here is what sits there: • Eight buildings, built by Crusoe for OpenAI and Oracle. Four are running now. • 1.2 gigawatts at full build, enough power for a million American homes. • More than 450,000 Nvidia GB200 chips, according to Oracle's Larry Ellison. • On-site gas turbines plus grid power, doing one job: training and running OpenAI's models. Britain is not building that, and shouldn't try. The goal here is sovereign AI, meaning compute on British soil, under British law, for data that is not allowed to leave. If your model runs in Texas, your data goes to Texas. For a bank, an NHS trust or a defence contractor, that is usually the whole conversation. What we have so far: • Five AI Growth Zones, Culham, North East, North Wales, South Wales and North Lanarkshire, with around £28bn committed. • Isambard-AI in Bristol, 5,448 Grace Hopper chips, for research. • Nscale's Loughton campus, 50 to 90 megawatts. • Vantage and Nebius signed the first commercial capacity in the South Wales zone at Newport this month. And three limits worth being honest about: • Power. UK industrial electricity is 24 to 30 pence per kilowatt hour, among the highest in the OECD. It is why OpenAI paused Stargate UK in April. • Grid and chips. Connection queues are pushing sites into the 2030s, and Nvidia decides who gets hardware. • Models. GPT and Claude are American.
