Roy later described the moment as a chance for the men to reflect on their own paths forward. “I wanted them to know that they made a difference in a positive way,” Roy said. He added that the men “took it upon themselves to cover that debt” without ever being asked. Reaching Out From Within was founded in 1982 in Kansas and now operates in correctional facilities across Kansas, North Carolina, and Missouri, built on the principle that incarcerated men and women remain members of their communities.
