The person whose life choices you had to overcome is never going to be proud of you for getting where you are. The best thing you can do for yourself is to stop seeking their validation. It took me getting to 50 to realize that.

They don’t care who u are, their opinion of who they think u are is more important. All the extra details about u and what’s make u special are irrelevant unless they come with bragging rights then MAYBE they’ll take interest..it’s all very surface level

10/10 I knew this but needed to hear it. my conditioned impulse to "relay on there judgement of what is best" is so strong. Their decision making has HISTORICALLY been bad for ME. I'm 40, enough time has past to SEE the track record but the impluse to cave to their perception is so hard wired. I just streghten this muscle a few weeks ago with a decision that really disrupted their world. i'm happy I looked out for myself this time. pat on the back.

Yes 🙌 my mother would say I know you better than you know yourself. Which she would also say about my siblings ( I know my children cause im their mother ) she didn’t/ doesn’t know us. After I woke up it changed to I don’t know you 😂.

Have you read The Drama of the Gifted Child? It changed a lot for me. The author’s description of a child whose purpose is to emotionally support their parents really connected with me and it was the start of my journey to deconstruct my relationship with my mother.

I stopped trusting my adoptive parents' judgement when they didnt support me leaving my violent ex husband (I left anyway). They dont approve of my new marriage to my very loving partner. Yeah their opinion means nothing to me now! ❤

My mom got mad at me because SHE “doesn’t even know what you do for work” I’ve been in my position for 5 years (I’m in my 40s) and I’ve told her multiple times. Only reason she asked? She was embarrassed when someone asked her what her daughter does for work.
