A, no debate. Anyone saying "b causes wear on the handbrake mechanism' hasn't got a clue. It's a ratchet, it's designed to be used that way.

A is correct because the cranking sound alerts you the emergency brake is fully engaged. The same sound is make by foot pedal emergency brakes
