This is a point I fundamentally disagree with. Sephiroth in the OG is not obsessed with Cloud; Cloud is obsessed with him. It's not even really Sephiroth in the original game as much as it is just Jenova.

My headcannon is that Cloud impaling Sephiroth leads to him losing his legs once he enters the Lifestream. At the Reunion when Cloud hands Steph’s real body the Black Materia, he’s just a torso. And neither Bizzaro / Seraph forms have legs either. 🤔

I love the idea that Sephiroth is dumbfounded that a no name grunt defeated him he decides to turn him into someone and one of the most important people. But the more brilliant part is this is all because of Sephiroth and his dna. Sephiroth went no your special now and it's all tied to me! I beat me, not some random grunt!

Something I don’t see more people talking about is that Sephiroth was in the Shinra Manor Basement for 7 (SEVEN!!) days and didn’t eat or sleep at all. A human brain, even one like Sephiroth’s wouldn’t be able to prevent depersonalization and psychosis. The perfect space for a virus to thrive. And I know real world rules might not apply, but I’ve always wondered if Sephiroth is gone and it’s all Jenova now. I know that the lore says he overpowered Jenova’s Will… but a virus like Jenova has no “will,” and wouldn’t the desperate attempts of a virus to stay alive look a lot like Sephiroth’s obsession with Cloud? The only living creature with Jenova Cells still inside of him? It’s pretty interesting that after “overpowering Jenova’s will” Sephiroth’s will is exactly the same as his “mother.” 🤔

I love talking about the progression of Sephiroth’s fixation on Cloud throughout the Compilation. In the OG, Sephiroth treats Cloud like a disposable tool. Then, after Cloud defeats Sephiroth yet again, we get Case of Lifestream Black where Sephiroth spends pretty much all of his time thinking about Cloud, going so far as to essentially rewrite himself with Cloud at the center. It’s fascinating to me. I think Sephiroth perhaps is undergoing a similar progression of thought regarding Cloud that Hojo does in the OG. Hojo initially dismisses Cloud as a failure only to realize later that Cloud was actually the only success. I think Sephiroth views Cloud as the closest to a being like himself as has ever been created.

Cloud has a genetic -> his cells are too weak to fight Jenova's, AND he's a weak will, that's what makes him the perfect guest for the parasite -> that's why he is so strong (he absorbed Jenova like a sponge, unlike Zack Fair for example) -> that's the non-emotional explanation (see Crisis Core)

That loss has made Sephiroth see Cloud as his back up plan. Another Kadaj if you will. It is very much an Orochimaru/Sasuke situation.

There’s one thing I’ve never understood. I don’t mean to sound power-scaley or anything like that, but how physically strong was Cloud before Hojo’s experiment on him? I used to believe that he was just too weak to be in Soldier and that he was basically just regular human strength. But I’ve heard through the grapevine that it turns out he WAS physically strong enough, he just failed a psychological test to get into Soldier. I know that in the long run it doesn’t matter that much, but it’s something that’s been bothering me lately.

Sephiroth has definitely seen the events of the og game. The entirety of remake is cloud just teasing him about that. He shows up constantly to manipulate cloud and get him so worked up that he’ll defy destiny and kill it just to have a chance at killing Sephiroth early and he almost does with omni slash at the ending of remake but because Sephiroth knows that move now he blocks it perfectly. By the end of remake you lost because you gave Sephiroth an actual chance to win and gave him the whispers.
