@taetakestheworld: When providers say they’ve “never seen” a dark-skinned newborn, that’s not a compliment. That’s a training gap and a safety issue. Our babies are not invisible. 🖤🩺 #MedicalRacism #pediatrics #healthcarebias #newborntok #raisingblacksons
So if a person is genuine shock that a baby came out dark skin, then maybe just maybe they haven’t seen it happened before, which doesn’t mean it’s colorist/racist. And even in healthcare, ppl know certain things can happen but it’s not a common thing for them to see. In the black community, it’s a saying “check baby’s ears to see what color he/she will be” because we have only known babies to come out “light”. (I was a light skin baby )

I knew a hospital newborn photographer. She brought a copy of all the photos home. None of the babies were darkskin. Most black babies aren’t born with all of their melanin. Medical racism exist but darkskin babies aren’t common.

Every Black baby I've ever seen comes very pale brown or light and turn darker later. All 3 of mine and every other baby. I don't really think it's racism.

I had a science teacher in HS and she tried to tell us all babies were born with light skin and get darker as they get older. I had to bring my nephews newborn photo from the hospital to prove to her otherwise. This was about 25 years ago.

Correct you have to look at the palms , whites of the eyes , nail beds to see certain conditions in darker people and babies

Yes, most of our kids come out fair skinned and grow into their color but also yes, there are darker babies. They come out with their darker skin very early on this is not uncommon. I don’t know why people are making a big deal out of this and if you from the south, you most definitely know this is true.💯💯💯🤷♀️

I was dark skinned too. When I hit 6mos I swelled up so bad that I didn’t want to be touched. The ER doc had no clue what was going on. It wasn’t until an older doctor came in and asked if he had checked my blood to see if I had Sickle Cell and I did. It wasn’t mandatory to check at birth back then, but it is now.

Why in these comments are yall not understanding that it is normal for a baby to be born dark skinned same any other? Why are yall not understanding that medical textbooks should always include dark skinned examples of all conditions it covers? 🙄

I’ve seen dark and light skinned newborns. Granted more light skinned ones but definitely seen quite a few dark skinned babies. I have no idea how a medical professional hasn’t 🤦🏼♀️

I don't think it's racism, might be colorism but I just think people just not used to seeing a newborn with their pigment/melanin already
