Did some math here assuming a full grown bull elk weighs about 800 pounds, and the fact that elk are known for a quick burst movements, here are some fun facts about how hard it would hit you. The weight of a bull elk on average is about that of a high utility ATV vehicle hitting you at the size of probably a Toyota truck. Now here’s where the math can get a little deceiving, if the elk were to hit you with its shoulder, it would probably hit you with over 300 pounds per square inch or psi. Now, if it were to spear you with its antler you’re looking at over 60,000 pounds of pressure with a pointed tip (because the antler tip surface area is so small, but that means much more damage. You will be in a severely critical situation and no one will get near that elk to try and help you. this is why Park Rangers recommend minimum 75 feet away with something substantial between you and that bull elk.

Working on a scenic train, I had a tourist ask me at what altitude do deer turn into elk. I could not ding a way to answer nicely.

Thank you. It’s crazy that people want to move into the mountains, AND COMPLAIN ABOUT LIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS.
